The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

The Metamorphosis

Rating: (3 of out 5)

When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin." With this startling, bizarre, yet surprisingly funny first sentence, Kafka begins his masterpiece, "The Metamorphosis." It is the story of a young man who, transformed overnight into a giant beetlelike insect, becomes an object of disgrace to his family, an outsider in his own home, a quintessentially alienated man. A harrowing -- though absurdly comic -- meditation on human feelings of inadequecy, guilt, and isolation, "The Metamorphosis" has taken its place as one of the mosst widely read and influential works of twentieth-century fiction. As W.H. Auden wrote, "Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man.

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.”

I found it difficult to cope with the absurdity of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. Gregor Samsa awakes one morning to discover he has, mysteriously, been turned into a bug. And we are not talking about something like a butterfly, or ladybug. While there is never a specific mention of the type of insect Gregor has been turned into, one was infer from the rather detailed description that it is something in the cockroach family. Ew. Now, I don’t know about other people, but if I found myself turned into a giant bug, with no explantion as to why or how this happened, I would not aim to live my life the way I had previously, before I grew several more legs, antennae and could climb walls…

Leading a normal life is exactly what our poor dear protagonist wishes to do however. He wakes up, discovers he is a bug, wonders briefly how that could have happened, then shrugs his insect shoulders and decides it is time to go to work.

Throughout the story, I felt sorry for Gregor. His family was quite atrocious. Before his transformation, Gregor was the bread winner of his family, which consists of his mother, father, and younger sister. He worked long and hard, at a job he could not stand just so he could support his family and allow them to live a comfortable life. The real kicker is, Gregor gets no thanks or any sign of gratitude from any of his family members. He does this for them out of love, yet receives little to no love in return. After turning into a bug, Gregor can see that his life has changed, he no longer holds the position as the son; he is not useful because he cannot earn money anymore, he is just a giant bug that is taking up space in the house. Gregor was dehumanized by his work, hence the transformation into a bug occurs.

To make matters worse, his family, naturally, doesn’t take the transformation very well. They neglect him in the end, and the ending is just tragic.

While I didn’t particularly like the story itself, I admired Kafka’s use of magic realism. This was a book I read for my Modern European Novel course. The discussions we had on our interpretations of this story were immensely intriguing. That is what I believe the purpose behind writing this story might have been for Kafka. He wanted to give his readers something that did not have just one sole interpretation, something that would boggle the mind and make readers think and delve deeper into what he was trying to get across. And because he made me do just that while reading this novel, I gave it 3 stars instead of two. The story itself, I did not like so much, but the way it made me think made up for that.

Waiting on Wednesday (#10)

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme highlights some of the books whose releases bloggers are most anticipating this year.

The book whose release I am most excited for this week is...

Wings (Black City #3)
By: Elizabeth Richards

Expected publication: June 12th 2014
Following the cliffhanger ending of Phoenix, Natalie finds herself separated from Ash and unexpectedly reunited with her parents, including the father she thought was dead. But she can only think of Ash. She hasn't heard a word of him since she and Elijah were brought to the underground headquarters of the Sentry Rebellion. But she vows to find him.

Ash, meanwhile is back in Black City; it's the perfect place to hide from the Sentry government. But not for long. He won't give up on Natalie or bringing an end to the terrible reign of Purian Rose.

A pulse-racing end to an exciting series.

First off, I want to apologize for it being nearly a year since I posted anything on this blog. I've been seriously slacking in reading and blogging, shameful I know. Hopefully, this post is the start of a comeback, so expect to see posts of some sort published weekly.

Now, on to Wings. The first book in the Black City series, Black City, had me hooked from page one. I cannot even begin to describe how obsessed I was with that book. Even so, there were a few things in the plot that bothered me. However, that didn't stop me from devouring the book and quickly moving on to the second.

At this point, I have mixed feelings about the book. There are parts I don't particularly like, yet I can't stop reading. I have to know what happens next. But don't get me wrong, while there are parts I don't like, there are parts I adore, though I won't go into that, wouldn't want to spoil anything for those of you who haven't read the series.

Final reason for wanting to read Wingscover-lust. The covers of the book in the Black City series are some of my favorites. They're so beautiful. Especially this one because well...it's a butterfly.

Valentine's Day MisAdventures

Obviously, today is Valentine's Day. Many may argue that it is a rather stupid and vain holiday, and some may think it is the most romantic. However way you look at it, you cannot deny that most people, love or hate the holiday, enjoy stuffing their faces with chocolate given to them by their loved ones.

Single people tend to feel left out of this holiday. I can see why, I really can. However, I feel like Valentine's Day is more than just about being with your significant lover; to me, it is a day to spend with anyone you love, whether it be friends, family, etc. If I am quite honest, I always had a problem with the idea that Valentine's Day is the one day of year you should share your love; in my opinion, you should always let the people you love know that you care, not necessarily by buying them chocolate and flowers everyday, but by doing little things. I think it's silly that people go all crazy with love just because a greeting card company tells them too. I feel as though everyday should be Valentine's Day when you are with someone you love, but that's just me.

So everyone, how is your Valentine's Day going?

Mine was pretty great, but not for the reason you think.

I spent the early afternoon hiking through a cypress swamp as a field trip for my Environmental Biology course. And naturally, living in Florida, it poured the whole last half hour we were there. If you have ever lived, or even visited Florida, then you are probably aware of how bi-polar the weather is here. Sunny one minute, raining cats and dogs the next.

Not only did we all get soaked, but on the way back, my group sort of got lost...we ended up driving thirty minutes in the opposite direction of our university. In our defense, the rain was still coming down hard and people down here don't know what to do when it rains. Florida drivers are pretty bad as it is, but throw in some rain and chaos breaks out; they act like they've never seen rain before. It ended up taking us about an hour to get back to campus when the swamp was only twenty minutes away.

Now all this may sound terrible, but honestly, it was actually pretty fun. Of course, I am sure it is not anyone's ideal way to spend their Valentine's Day, but we ended up enjoying ourselves and having a good laugh. It also gave us the opportunity to play the license plate game; this time of the year, we get all sorts of people visiting from other states, especially the snowbirds from up north.

(Some of the plates we saw; realized I missed a few after I posted this; oops!)

So that is my Valentine's Day story. My plans for the rest of the night? Eating chocolate, watching the hockey game King of the Nerds with my friends (I have no idea why we find this show so fascinating; I hate reality shows but just can't stop watching this one) xD

Die For Her (Revenants #2.5)
By: Amy Plum

Expected publication: April 2nd 2013
Set in the romantic and death-defying world of the international bestselling Die for Me trilogy, this digital original novella follows Jules, a brooding, immortal French artist who has fallen in love with his best friend’s girlfriend.

Jules Marchenoir is a revenant-an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save human lives. He’s spent the better part of the last century flirting his way through Paris, but when he met Kate Mercier, the heroine from Amy Plum’s Die for Me trilogy, he knew his afterlife had changed forever and he had found the love of his life. Until Kate fell for his best friend, Vincent. Now Jules is faced with an impossible decision: choosing between his loyal friend and a love truly worth dying for.

I became a huge fan of Amy Plum immediately after reading her book Die For Me, which is the first book in her Revenant series. I fell in love with the book from line one. You may have already known this because I had previsously showcased another one of her books in another WOW.

This is a novella that takes place between the second book Until I Die, which I am now currently reading, and her third book which has not yet been released.

    Mind Games (Mind Games #1)
    By: Kiersten White

    Expected publication: February 19th 2013
Fia was born with flawless instincts. Her first impulse, her gut feeling, is always exactly right. Her sister, Annie, is blind to the world around her—except when her mind is gripped by strange visions of the future.

Trapped in a school that uses girls with extraordinary powers as tools for corporate espionage, Annie and Fia are forced to choose over and over between using their abilities in twisted, unthinkable ways… or risking each other’s lives by refusing to obey.

In a stunning departure from her New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy, Kiersten White delivers a slick, edgy, heartstoppingly intense psychological thriller about two sisters determined to protect each other—no matter the cost.

So I am going to start off this week's WOW by apologizing for posting it late. Classes this week have been crazy and I have had so much going on; normally, I create these posts in advance and put it on a posting schedule to avoid things like this, but I was too busy to do even that. But, here it is! Two days late is better than never!

Mind Games, why do I want to read this book so very badly? Simple: Kiersten White is the author and she is absolutely brilliant! Her Paranormalcy series is one of my all-time favorite series of all time. So naturally, when I read the last book in the series and found out she was coming out with something new, I just had to know more about it. Upon stumbling across the synopsis, I just knew I had to read this book when it came out, which is in 11 days! :D

If you have not read Kiersten White's Paranormalcy series and you are looking for a good, fast-paced, enjoyable, funny story with a sweet romance, check it out!

    Vampire Academy Movie

There have been rumors about a film adaptation of Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy Series for years now. As of about two days ago, the rumors were finally confirmed and the wheels have been set in motion. The movie is to be called Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters. I have seen a lot of complaints about the title, but I personally do not think it's all that bad. If you look into the logic behind it, it makes sense. Plus, if you read the books, then the whole "blood sisters" thing makes a lot of sense, don't you think? Though I am tired of Hollywood turning all my favorite books into movies, because quite frankly, I don't trust them, I cannot lie and say I am not excited for this movie. The cast actually seems alright; they got a real Russian actor to play Dimitri, which was a great move on their part, in my opinion.

(This is a fan made video of the REAL cast of the movie)

    (Zoey Deuth - Rose Hathaway)
    (Lucy Fry - Lissa)
    (Danila Kozlovski - Dimitri)

If you want to know more about the upcoming movie, the movie's fan page has been blowing up Facebook with links to all sorts of articles. http://www.facebook.com/#!/OfficialVampireAcademyMovie?fref=ts
