Waiting on Wednesday (#1)

After browsing through the various book blogs I follow, I came across many that participate in the meme 'Waiting on Wednesday'. I read more into it, and decided that it sounds like a meme I can actually stick to on a regular basis, so today marks the first Waiting on Wednesday! It is similar to the post I made yesterday listing the books I am dying to read.

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme highlights some of the books whose releases bloggers are most anticipating this year.

The book whose release I am most excited for this week is...

Title: Dead Silence (The Body Finder #4)
Expected publication: April 16th 2013

No summary currently available on GoodReads

I cannot wait to read this book because Kimberly Derting is an amazing author. This series is one that my best friend and I really enjoy. The series is intense, mysterious, and her plotlines are always intriguing. Never have I read any of her books and been dissappointed. The main characters, especially Jay, are just...how should I put this? Awesome! Yep, they're awesome ;D April seems like so far away, but it will definitely be worth the wait.

A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan

It should have been a short suspended-animation sleep. But this time Rose wakes up to find her past is long gone-- and her future full of peril.Rosalinda Fitzroy has been asleep for sixty-two years when she is woken by a kiss. Locked away in the chemically induced slumber of a stasis tube in a forgotten subbasement, sixteen-year-old Rose slept straight through the Dark Times that killed millions and utterly changed the world she knew. Now, her parents and her first love are long gone, and Rose-- hailed upon her awakening as the long-lost heir to an interplanetary empire-- is thrust alone into a future in which she is viewed as either a freak or a threat. Desperate to put the past behind her and adapt to her new world, Rose finds herself drawn to the boy who kissed her awake, hoping that he can help her to start fresh. But when a deadly danger jeopardizes her fragile new existence, Rose must face the ghosts of her past with open eyes-- or be left without any future at all

Anna Sheehan proved with this novel that you can write a brilliant, innovative, first young adult fiction story without shiny vampires, werewolves or fallen angels.

If you're thinking this is just another attempt at a retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty, then STOP thinking that. This book is FAR from just another retelling. It is unique and special all its in own way.

Anna Sheehan tells a beautiful story. It begins with Rosalinda Fitzroy awakening from 62 years of stasis, a 16 year old in body & mind, frozen in time until she is found in a forgotten subbasement by her teenage savior. She is lost, confused , and terribly alone for everyone she has ever known is now dead and gone. This includes her first and only love. Xavier.

Sheehan has such an amazing way with words. She draws Rose with a subtle and sympathetic hand. Reading this novel, I could almost envision Rose waking up in this new world, so very alone and frigthened.

I LOVED the romance angles in this book. It's what made it really stand out for me. Sheehan writes the scenes between Rose and Xavier with a vivid hand that brings them to life. It was understandable as well, how Rose became infatuated with Bren. He was, indeed, her savior. He was also one of the few people she befriends throughout the whole novel. It was nice how despite confessing her attraction towards Bren and being some-what rudely rejected at first, they maintained a good friendship. I freakin' loved Otto! That little blue alien *sighs* I hope something happens between him and Rose on a future occassion. I could see a potential relationship from the first time they "spoke". I loved this conversation between them:
“Now I have a question," Otto wrote.
"Fire away."
"What do you see in him?"
"Apart from the obvious?"
"What’s the obvious? I’m afraid I’m not a teenage girl.”
I loved how this book was more of a sci-fi than paranormal. The YA market is seriously lacking in decent, well-thought-out science fiction novels. At least, I haven't come across any recently until now. I cannot wait to see what Anna Sheehan writes next (sequel maybe?! ;)) and look forward to her next novel, whatever it may be about. I recommend this book to anyone. I'm going to leave you guys with some quotes I liked from the novel. I read in on my Kindle Fire and tend to go crazy highlighting quotes I like when I read on it lol
“Did you know I blush purple? Jamal’s teasing me about it."
"Is he reading this?" I asked, horrified.
"No."
"Sorry I made you blush."
"I’m not. Good night, Briar Rose."
"Good night, blue-skinned alien.”

“I haven't finished revisiting Sleeping Beauty. As a faerie tale, that one is rife with inherent difficulties. After all, the world doesn't stop just because one person is asleep.”

Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy #1) by Kiersten White

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

I'm going to start off by saying this book was fantastic! Much better than I ever dreamed it would be, and I have been beating myself up wondering why I waited so long to read it.

The characters, Evie espeicially, were quirky, unique and lovable though I cannot understand her extreme obsession with the color pink :/ Evie's voice was funny, sassy, and endearing. Lend was absolutely one of the greatest boyfriends in the world. He was an incredibly original character (thank you Kiersten White for not making him a vampire or something cliche!). I was suspicious of Reth throughout the whole book, but my favorite character was Lish. I was so crushed at the end. I loved hher relationship with Evie; how Evie would rehash episodes of Easton Heights for her, and how Lish couldn't curse and when she tried too, all that would come out was "Bleep". It definitely made the story more entertaining whenever Evie picked up on Lish's habit.

This book was unlike any other YA novel I have come across yet. It had me hooked from page one with this quote:
I sighed. I hated vamp jobs. They think they're so suave. It's not enough for them to slaughter and eat you like a zombie would. No, they want it to be all sexy, too. And, trust me: vampires? Not. Sexy. I mean, sure, their glamours can be pretty hot, but the dry-as-bone corpse bodies shimmering underneath? Nothing attractive there. Not that anyone else can see them though.

What it was about this line that caught my attention is still a mystery to me. Perhaps it was the fact that I'm quite tired of vampires even though I do like them. Or maybe it was the little shimmering jab which automatically makes my brain think Twilight. But regardless, I was hooked by that first page and I never expected to be thrown on this wild ride of Evie's.

The plot was highly orginal, and throughout the book, the characters never lost appeal to me. Evie remained sassy and bad-ass, and Lend just adorably sweet (more so in the next book). I liked how series doesn't just revolve around one sole paranormal species. It's full of pretty much anything paranormal creature you've ever heard of, and even some you haven't.

Paranormalcy was a captivating first installment to a great series and I could not wait to read the second book once I finally finished. Since writing this review, I have fiished the second book so I will be putting up a review for that one soon as well. Now I' am dying for the third book!

Arise (Hereafter #2) by Tara Hudson

Amelia—still caught between life and death—must fight for every moment of her relationship with the human boy Joshua. They can hardly even kiss without Amelia accidentally dematerializing. Looking for answers, they go to visit some of Joshua’s Seer relatives in New Orleans. But even in a city so famously steeped in the supernatural, Amelia ends up with more questions than answers…and becomes increasingly convinced that she and Joshua can never have a future together.Wandering through the French Quarter, Amelia meets other in-between ghosts, and begins to seriously consider joining them. And then she meets Gabrielle. Somehow, against impossible odds, Gaby has found a way to live a sort of half-life...a half-life for which Amelia would pay any price. Torn between two worlds, Amelia must choose carefully, before the evil spirits of the netherworld choose for her.

Before I begin reviewing the book, I just wanna ask, "How gorgeous is this cover?!" I mean seriously, it is perhaps my favorite cover ever, even if it is a creepy gaveyard.

Now, I have been DYING to get my hands on this book, which is the second book in Tara Hudson's Hereafter series, the first book being Hereafter, of course. This is one of my favorite series as of this moment. It's one of the few that doesn't have a female protagonist that drives me insane *cough* Clary from the Immortal Instruments *cough*. That was not-so-subtle example of one lead female who I cannot stand. But Clary is a whole other story; you can read my review expressing my dislike of her in the City of Lost Souls here

But back to Arise. If the cover wasn't amazing enough, the story itself would make up for it. Naturally, I have read a few ghostly love stories but never has one captured my interest for throughout the whole book. Normally I get bored along the way, but Tara Hudson tells Amelia's story in such a way that I had trouble putting this book down. The writing had perfect flow, and obviously, I never came across a dull moment in the book.

As for the plot itself, I was in awe. It's pretty freakin' amazing if I do say so myself. There were so many different twists and turns, all just adding to the suspense and intensity of the dire situation Amelia is faced with. Not only is Amelia on the run from psycho ghosts and other frightening creatures, she is faced with a seemingly impossible decision: should she finally move on and let Joshua live a normal, ghostless life where he is safe from harm, or risk him and everyone else she cares for because of her own selfish wants? I honestly did not want the couple to break up, but of course, the only rational decision would be to do whatever it took to keep Joshua safe.

In this installment, we get introduced to many new faces and also a new setting, for the majority of the book takes place in New Orleans where Joshua's family is meeting for the holidays. This seemed like an excellment setting for the story since New Orleans is so rich with history and ghost stories. In New Orleans, you meet some of Josh's family (aunts, cousins, etc) and also Gabby and her brother. Now, I won't go into too much detail with these characters because if I did, I might be giving away spoilers, and I don't want to ruin the book for anybody. I will say that at first, I didn't like Gaby; I didn't think she could be trusted, but in the end, I really liked her.

I cannot wait for Hudson's next installment which I hope will be just as good as the first two. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves a good ghost story or star-crossed lovers. It's full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. This book deservedly received 5 out of 5 stars (well...butterflies actually ;)) from me.

Other Words For Love by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal

When an unexpected inheritance enables Ari to transfer to an elite Manhattan prep school, she makes a wealthy new friend, Leigh. Leigh introduces Ari to the glamorous side of New York—and to her gorgeous cousin, Blake. Ari doesn't think she stands a chance, but amazingly, Blake asks her out. As their romance heats up, they find themselves involved in an intense, consuming relationship. Ari's family worries that she is losing touch with the important things in life, like family, hard work, and planning for the future.

When misfortune befalls Blake's family, he pulls away, and Ari's world drains of color. As she struggles to get over the breakup, Ari must finally ask herself: were their feelings true love . . . or something else?

I loved this book more than I thought I would.

I felt so connected to Ari; the writing style of Ms Rosenthal really lets you get in her head. Ari is just your typical high schooler. Her sister got married and pregnant at 18 so their mother has always been hard on Ari, pushing her to be her best, as a way to right the wrongs of her older sister. For the most part, Ari did just that. However, life isn't always so eay for her. She's been in love with her sister's husband Patrick since she was 10 years old. Her sister also gets very depressed easily, and her kids prefer Ari to their own mother.

The characters spoke out to you. They seemed like real people. Ari's best friend Summer was just a horrible friend. Ari and Summer had been friends forever; Summer was her only friend. And Summer liked to keep it that way. She didn't like when Ari met Leigh and they started hanging out and getting close. Summer was the kind of person who liked having someone they thought was below them to hang around with because she felt it made her look better. I hated her. She really treated Ari badly. Leigh and Ari had a lot in common, and also a rough past. They were good for eachother. But when Ari meets Leigh's cousin Blake, she falls in love instantly. Leigh feels left out after a few months, and when she moves to California, her annd Ari don't part on good terms. I had liked Blake for the most part. But he needed to learn to put his wants ahead of his father.

This book was heart-breaking at times. I was really rooting for Blake and Ari. Ari had gone through so much in a few short months following meeting Leigh. I felt as though I could sort of relate with Ari. She was a migraine sufferer, and so am I. It's hard, I know, and it can be very debilitating. As for her "deformity"(which I don't really want to say, it's sort of embarassing lol), it's not as uncommon as she believes and yes, it is annoying and can make you uncomfortable with yourself, but it's not the worst thing in the world and most people don't even notice, so it's no big deal.

As I said, I really liked this book. Obviously enough to give it 5 stars (err...butterflies actually :)). I would reccommend this book to anyone who is a fan of realistic fiction. I normally don't read too much of it, but I really enjoyed this one. I would say though, that's its probably more for girls, but if you're a guy, go ahead and read it! I won't stop you :)
